I’m thankful for turkeys and Trader Joe

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. In Canada, Thanksgiving isn’t quite as big a deal as American Thanksgiving – but I was always jealous of our southern neighbors and their November festivities. I love mashed potatoes and mac and cheese and stuffing and cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie, so of course, I loved Thanksgiving.

Four Days in Lisbon

We arrived in Lisbon on the hottest day of the year, after a scenic but cramped and occasionally nauseating 5-hour car ride from Seville. The streets of downtown Lisbon – the ones that aren’t stairs – are so narrow and winding that our driver dropped us off a few blocks away from our Airbnb. By the time we arrived at our Airbnb, we were drenched in sweat and out of breath. I think we climbed 10 sets of stairs and at least three very steep hills – up and down! I was, needless to say, very cranky. Of course, the crankiness dissipated with a long shower and soon we were off to our first dinner stop.  Continue reading →

State of the Union

This baby panda gets me.

It’s been a long and unusually cruel election. I can’t tell you how heartbroken I am to know that so many of my neighbors and fellow citizens are so angry, so disillusioned, that they would cast a vote in favor of walls and isolation. To know that the most well-qualified woman can still be passed over for… well, we all know for who. But Hillary has always been a beginning. We can take these next four years to fight for our values and to move this country forward – together, out of love and hope instead of fear and hate. At the end of the day, we are all Americans and this country belongs to all of us.
